My father continued to view his efforts to clean up Local 544 as following Hoffa’s announced goal of union reform. He also knew, but could not understand why, Hoffa wanted the insurgency against Snyder to end; Conklin’s abandonment, the mysterious visitor from Detroit, and Steinberg’s warnings had made that clear. But Hoffa always said he wanted to hear directly from union members about problems, and my dad continued to take that offer at face value. In a personal letter to Hoffa dated March 11, my father expressed his admiration, explained his actions as in the union’s best interests, and politely said that Hoffa had no proper role in the upcoming meeting. “It has been announced that you have been invited by Fred V. Snyder to speak at a regular membership meeting of Local 544,” he wrote.
The members appreciate the opportunity to hear you speak, but we feel that a special meeting should have been called for that purpose. Mr. Snyder has postponed our regularly scheduled meeting of the 17th, and we do not feel that our regular membership meeting should be delayed. We want our regular membership meeting, and, in addition, a special meeting to hear you speak.
We cannot understand why Mr. Snyder is trying so hard to keep the special audit from the members of this local. If, as he claims, there is nothing to hide, he should be anxious for the membership to see this audit. His continuing efforts to block the audit make us all the more keen to find out how the finances of this union were handled in 1959. The members want this audit to be made available to any Local 544 Teamster who wants it.
